IBM dumps servers for mainframes
Saves $250 million
BIGGISH BLUE is to save $250 million by consolidating nearly 4,000 small computer servers in six locations onto about 30 Linux mainframes.
The 4,000 servers, which are in IBM’s data centres in Poughkeepsie, New York, Southbury, Connecticut, Boulder, Colorado, Portsmouth, UK, Osaka, Japan, and Sydney, Australia will be recycled by IBM Global Asset Recovery Services.
According to Network World, the six data centres currently take up over eight million square feet. However each of the Red Hat System z mainframes are the size of a fridge and will take up a fraction of the space.
However IBM intends to expand its data centre operations in the future so it will need the space anyway.
The move is part of IBM’s ‘Big Green’ project which aims to save money on data centres by using more efficient technology
