Wi-LAN signs up Powerstar as fifth licensee under preferential programWi-LAN signs up Powerstar as fifth licensee under preferential program

Patent licensing firm Wi-LAN Inc. has added its fifth licensing agreement for its wireless technology patents under its early licence program.

The Ottawa-based company said it has signed a licence agreement with Calgary wireless and digital solutions provider Powerstar International Inc., which provides public Wi-Fi networks, digital signage, corporate communications and business television over wireless, satellite and terrestrial platforms.

The five-year royalty-based agreement will see Powerstar making quarterly cash payments to Wi-LAN on revenues generated from its Wi-Fi/WiMAX hot spots, based on a 0.5-per-cent running royalty.

The early licence program, which wrapped up yesterday, was introduced in October last year to offer clients patent licences at reduced rates if they signed up by the deadline.

Nokia, March Networks, Fujitsu and another unnamed client in the communications and consumer electronics market have also signed up for licences under the program.
