Official: Intel releases Core 2 Duo, Core 2 Extreme

Santa Clara (CA) - At about 12:15 pm Eastern time this afternoon, Intel released official news to North American sources that it is releasing a total of ten new Core Microarchitecture processors this morning, in an event now scheduled for 11:30 am Pacific Time (2:30 pm ET). They are, as anticipated, the Conroe-based Core 2 Extreme model X6800; the Conroe-based Core 2 Duo desktop processors E6700, E6600, E6400, and E6300; and the Merom-based Core 2 Duo mobile processors T7600, T7400, T7200, T5600, and T5500.

Shipments of all Core 2 Duo and Extreme processors has already begun, Intel confirmed today. Availability for the desktop series is expected “in early August,” with the mobile series “at the end of August,” according to an Intel statement received by TG Daily moments ago.

Pricing information is not yet available for the mobile series, although we now have official prices for the desktop models: The Extreme will sell, as expected, for $999. The four models in the Core 2 Duo series will sell for $530, $316, $224, and $183, respectively. This information precisely matches price projections obtained two weeks ago by TG Daily, for processors sold in 1000-unit quantities to distributors (”tray prices”). Street prices for these models may be slightly higher.
