Need More Storage? Try Seagate’s Giant 750GB Hard Drive
Seagate has just started shipping its massive 750GB drive. The huge drive uses perpendicular recording, a way to get tons more data on the platters, roughly ten times as much as with traditional longitudinal recording.
PC World (and specifically, the very lucky Melissa Perenson) has already tested one of these monsters; read her First Look for the writeup.
No, the drives aren’t cheap. The list price for the Serial ATA drive is $590. (Stop shaking your head. I paid $600 for an 80MB drive a decade ago, so this sounds like a bargain.) I’m guessing it will discount at about $500. Either way, the release of the 7200.10 line means you’ll see a price reduction on other Seagate drives. If you’re interested, Seagate’s PDF product overview has plenty of technical specs.
